Student Lounge Gets Long-Awaited Facelift
The Seymour Union student lounge is getting a long-awaited facelift that will provide Knox students with a spruced-up space where they can grab a bite to eat, watch movies, listen to bands, play games, or just relax. The project, which started shortly after Thanksgiving, could be finished by the time Knox students return for the spring term. "The things it will add to student life on campus are enormous," said Craig Southern, associate dean of students for campus life.
The entire area will be redone, with one side consisting mainly of pool tables, ping pong tables, and other types of games. The other side will be an all-purpose room, with a screen for movies and a stage for musicians or other performers. Students will be able to watch television or play video games on the monitors that will be placed throughout the lounge. Sandwiches and other food and drinks will be available from vending machines. Learn more about the renovation.

Winter Parking on Campus
If your student has a car on campus, he or she needs to be aware of the Snow Parking Policy. The City of Galesburg enacts a “snow emergency” on all city streets when snow accumulation reaches two inches. Vehicles parked on city streets at that time will be subject to ticketing and towing by the City of Galesburg. The parking prohibition will remain in effect on all city streets for a period of 12 hours or until the street has been completely plowed. Local radio stations will broadcast snow emergency announcements and the College will notify students if a snow emergency has been enacted.

Knox Presidential Search Update
The Presidential Search Committee met on January 5 and 6 to interview semi-finalists. They were very impressed with the qualities and experience of everyone interviewed. At the end of the meeting, the committee decided to invite three of the candidates to campus for a second round of interviews, which will take place later in January. The committee’s next meeting will take place following the campus interviews. Follow the Presidential Search process.

Tips on Coping with the Winter Blues
Winter term at Knox can be somewhat challenging. Your student may complain more about the weather, his or her classes, roommate situations, etc. Read an article with some good tips for students on beating those winter blues; in addition, we asked some of our current students for some ideas to share with your student on how to get through winter term.
"Winter term at Knox is the hardest out of all the terms because of the weather . . . students should take classes that will boost their grades and not stress them out too much, and also take classes that interest them. Parents should be understanding and very supportive during this term because it is what I like to call a 'blah' term." -- Celestina Agyekum '12
"Winter term is a great time to try something new, perhaps joining a club, sport, or volunteering. Students are excited about their new activity and are busy, distracting them from winter term blues." -- Stephanie Sorensen '12
"One thing that I've always loved about winter term is the spontaneous snowball fights. They don't always happen. They certainly couldn't happen right now, with no snow on the ground. But when you and a bunch of your friends are walking across a powder white campus and someone gets hit with a snowball, all of the frustration of winter and classes and darkness is suddenly released into a big snowy mess. It's awesome." -- Keegan Siebken '11
"Do something you enjoy for one hour every day." -- Helen Hapner '11
"Get a workout buddy and hit the gym! Not only will you help your body recover from the holidays, but you can also get toned and fit for spring break!" -- Ryan Larson '11
"Keep your room stocked with coffee. Brewing it in the morning not only helps me wake up when it's so dreary out, but taking a warm mug to class makes going out in the cold not so bad!" -- Brittany Wisniewski '13
If your student is dealing with depression or possibly has seasonal affective discorder, we encourage him or her to contact our Health and Counseling Center at 309-341-7492 to talk with a counselor. Academic questions should be addressed with the professor or by contacting the Associate Dean of the College, Lori Haslem, at 309-341-7214.

Knox Students Give College High Marks for Classes, Campus Experiences
Knox College students give the college high marks for educational experiences -- both in class and outside of class -- according to the 2010 National Survey of Student Engagement.
The survey found that Knox seniors are twice as likely as the average college student to complete significant work in a foreign language, more likely to study abroad, more likely to interact with students from different backgrounds, and more than twice as likely as the average college student to have done an independent study class or an independent academic major. All are activities that the survey describes as "enriching educational experiences." Read more about the survey.

Knox Students Donate Resources, Help Feed Local Schoolchildren
The generosity of Knox College students is helping to feed Galesburg schoolchildren during their extended winter break this year. Knox students have donated 1,576 "meal swipes" from their college meal plans to provide meals for schoolchildren through the Lunch Spot, a communitywide initiative. Knox students also volunteered to help assemble the Lunch Spot sack lunches.
"It's a phenomenal thing the students have done," said Rhonda Brady, executive director of the Knox County Area Project, a Lunch Spot sponsor. "Knox students want to be a part of the community and help the community." Learn more about the Lunch Spot Project.
